What type of oil does a Craftsman riding lawn mower take?
Craftsman lawnmowers use SAE 30 oil, which is the standard small engine oil. This is a type of all-purpose oil that can be used in push mowers and riding mowers. Craftsman mowers can also use synthetic 5W-30 oil because it protects the engine for longer in all temperature conditions.
Can I use 5W30 instead of 10W30 in my lawn mower?
If you already have a stock of synthetic 5W30 to use up, then YES, it will be fine. Yes a synthetic 5w30 completely replaces any mineral sae 30 or 10w30 in these applications. If you are buying this new I would just go straight to the 10w30 synthetic since a lawnmower doesn’t need extra cold flow properties.
How much oil does a Craftsman lawn mower take?
The most common Craftsman lawn mower models today are the 4-cycle, single-cylinder gas engines with 6.5 horsepower. With such engine size, they need about 20 ounces (. 60 liters) of oil in their crankcase to keep them running in their best performance.
What oil do I use for a Briggs and Stratton lawn mower?
Use Briggs & Stratton SAE 30W Oil above 40°F (4°C) for all of our engines. Check oil level regularly. Air-cooled engines burn about an ounce of oil per cylinder, per hour. Fill to mark on dipstick.
Is SAE 30 the same as 10W30?
SAE 10W30 is an oil that has SAE 10W viscosity(thickness) at low temperatures, and SAE 30 viscosity at high temperatures. The W stands for ‘Winter’. At operating temperature, there’ll likely be little difference between SAE 30 and SAE 10W30. In theory, they’re the same at high temperature, which is IIRC set at 100C.
Can I use 10W30 instead of SAE 30?
Yes, you can make use 10W30 engine oil instead of the SAE30 in your Lawn Mower. Older engines can use the SAE30, while the 10W30 is for modern engines. Again, the SAE30 is better for warmer temperatures while the 10W30 is suitable for varying temperature ranges and also works well in cold weather.
Can you use 5w30 synthetic oil in a lawn mower?
Yes! We have recently modified our engine oil recommendations to state that you may now use a synthetic 5W30 or 10W30 oil in all temperature ranges. Please keep in mind that the use of synthetic oil does not preclude you from performing your regularly scheduled lawn mower maintenance (i.e. check oil, change oil, etc.)
What is the difference between SAE 30 oil and 5w30?
SAE 30 is a single viscosity motor oil. Only multi viscosity motor oils only should be used in any car. 5W means that the oil at cold temperatures acts like a 5 weight thinner oil. 5W30 is motor oil that is thinner when cold than 30 weight motor oil and thicker than 5 weight motor oil when hot.
Can I use 10W30 car oil in my lawn mower?
10W30 is a common motor oil grade suitable for many lawn mowers. Your owner’s manual will tell you the exact grade required, but in almost all cases 10W30 is the right stuff for a four-stroke engines. Any brand of oil that’s suitable for cars or trucks will work fine in your mower.

Is synthetic oil better for lawn mower?
When choosing lawn mower oil, use a high-quality detergent oil classified as “For Service SF, SG, SH, SJ” or higher. Do not use special additives. Synthetic oils are an acceptable oil at all temperatures. The use of synthetic oil does not alter required oil change intervals.
Is synthetic oil good for Air-Cooled Engines?
The wider range of temperatures that synthetic oil can withstand is well suited for the air – cooled VW engine. On average, when synthetic oil is run in an air – cooled VW engine, head temperatures stay the same, but engine oil temps reduce by anywhere from 10 to 15 degrees.
Can you use non detergent oil in a lawn mower?
Non – detergent motor oil is commonly used in lawnmower engines because mower engines are not used daily like passenger vehicles; the engines are not as large as in passenger vehicles; and do not contain multiple cylinders and as many components as passenger vehicles.
Can I use synthetic oil in my Kawasaki lawn mower engine?
Kawasaki Genuine engine oils, formulated specifically for high performance constant-speed, air-cooled engines, are strongly recommended for maximum cooling, lubrication and protection. For the ultimate performance in low and high temperature applications, use Kawasaki Genuine 10W-30, 10W-40 or 20W-50 synthetic blend.
