What does PTO stand for on a tractor?
The Power Take-Off (PTO) shaft is an efficient means of transferring mechanical power between farm tractors and implements.
What is the difference between 540 and 1000 PTO?
1000 -rpm PTO shaft on implements requiring less than 150 PTO hp, such as manure spreaders and rotary cutters. 540 -rpm PTO shaft on implements requiring less than 75 PTO hp (light loads only), such as auger applications.

Are PTO shafts universal?
The parts of a PTO shaft consist of the internal and external PTO yoke, universal joint, safety chain and safety shield. Several different types of PTO shafts are available, so it’s essential to choose the right one for your equipment and applications.
How much should a PTO shaft overlap?
In the collapsed position the driveline should be approximately 2″ from bottoming out to prevent possible damage to the tractor or implement. When the PTO is in the maximum extended position, the ideal minimum overlap of the two halves should be approximately 6″ (see figure on right).
Why is the PTO dangerous?
The fast rotation speed, operator error, and lack of proper guarding make PTOs a persistent hazard on farms and ranches. Injuries that can be sustained from PTO incidents include severe contusion, cuts, spinal and neck injuries, dislocations, broken bones, and scalping. Some incidents can result in fatalities.
Is 540 or 1000 PTO better?
The faster speeds allow either cheaper pto shafts, or more hp to be moved through the same size shaft. Some folks run easy loads on the rear at 1/2 throttle to save fuel with the 1000 pto driving a 540 implement, but you should never run a 540 implement faster than 540 so be careful.
What do you use a 1000 PTO for?
1000 rpm setting should only be used for 1000 rpm rated equipment as it could permanently damage the equipment or even cause unsafe performance as in the case of a bush hog or other rotating machinery.
What does a 540 PTO mean?
The 540 / 540 Economy PTO allows operators to select the engine rpm needed for their power take-off ( PTO ) application. This selection gives 540 rpm to the PTO shaft and delivers the fully-advertised horsepower at rated engine speed.
