Should you grease PTO splines?
The PTO shaft should be greased regularly to keep the universal joints from failing and to stop the shaft from seizing. Failure to grease your shaft regularly or as outlined in the PTO shaft’s maintenance schedule could result in end thrust potentially destroying the implement’s gearbox.
Are all tractor PTO shafts the same size?
Most tractors with 1000 rpm (1-3/8″ diameter) PTO shaft have a distance of 16 inches from the end of the tractor PTO shaft to the hitch point. The same procedure can be used as in the example, however, the dimensions will be different.
Are PTO shafts universal?
The parts of a PTO shaft consist of the internal and external PTO yoke, universal joint, safety chain and safety shield. Several different types of PTO shafts are available, so it’s essential to choose the right one for your equipment and applications.
How a PTO works on a tractor?
The tractor’s stub shaft, often called the PTO, transfers power from the tractor to the PTO -driven machine or implement. Power transfer is accomplished by connecting a drive shaft from the machinery to the tractor’s PTO stub shaft. The PTO and drive shaft rotate at 540 rpm (9 times/sec.) or 1,000 rpm (16.6 times/sec.)
How much should a PTO shaft overlap?
In the collapsed position the driveline should be approximately 2″ from bottoming out to prevent possible damage to the tractor or implement. When the PTO is in the maximum extended position, the ideal minimum overlap of the two halves should be approximately 6″ (see figure on right).

Modern 540 RPM PTO shafts are the same size. The 1000 RPM PTO shafts on larger tractors are different.

Are all PTO the same?
Though some employers may offer additional vacation time as a reward to particular employees, PTO policies reduce the chances of showing favoritism. Employees all earn PTO at the same rate with the same amount of effort, depending on how long they have been with the company.
